![]() What did they think was going to happen? We see the same intense desire by the Democrat-controlled state government to concentrate all power in the hands of unelected committees and planning groups in Denver. It is ironic that PLAN-Boulder now is so agitated about the enactment of a policy that was advocated by the candidate they supported. Now we have Junie representing us both on the City Council, where she voted to support SB23-213 and in the State Legislature, where she will probably do the same thing when the bill comes up for a vote in the House. Instead, she used the Biden strategy of laying low and trusting in the Democrat super-majority to carry her into office as a state legislator. Junie never attended a debate or stepped out of her house to discuss the issues with me in front of PLAN-Boulder or anyone else. No one in the campaign was a stronger supporter of the state takeover of housing, homelessness and land use than my opponent, Junie Joseph. Nonetheless, one of the main issues I wanted to discuss with PLAN-Boulder was what I saw as the threat to local land use control by the State Legislature. DeOreo: Housing: When will Boulder wake up to threat of losing local control?Įarlier this year, PLAN-Boulder issued a dire warning about the takeover of local zoning, land use and housing regulations by the State of Colorado under SB23-213, I find it really ironic that when I was a candidate for HD10, running against Junie Joseph, I asked to speak to PLAN-Boulder about the issues, and why I thought they should support my candidacy, but was refused a forum, primarily because I am opposed to the abortion on demand until the day of birth policies of the state legislature. ![]() ![]() Should that be the case, the universe may contain approximately one mole of stars! What a wonderful world! The recent discoveries made by the James Webb Space Telescope suggests that an updated number of galaxies may be “Trillions and Trillions” of galaxies. Not every human lives to celebrate this special day.Ĭonsider also: Carl Sagan taught us in his ”Cosmos” (2008) series that the universe contains “Billions and Billions” of galaxies, each made up of perhaps 10 billion stars on average. ![]() “Cheers to Avogadro!” This special day in 2023 is but its second occurrence it happens only once a century. I invite readers to join me in a toast to Avogadro on his special day, 06/02/23, in consuming 18 grams, just a bit under 2 tablespoons, of water. One mole of water molecules, H2O, its molar mass being 18 grams, is 6.02 x 10^23 water molecules. One mole of atoms is 6.02 x 10^23 atoms one mole of molecules is 6.02 x 10^23 molecules. It is a counting number, just as a dozen is 12, a gross is 144, a mole is 6.02 x 10^23. When that volume is 22.4 liters at zero degrees Centigrade and 1 atm pressure the number of atoms or molecules contained in that volume of gas is 6.02 x 10^23 particles, now identified as one mole, Avogadro’s Number. He discovered that all gas volumes at identical temperatures and pressures have the same number of atoms or molecules. ![]() Lorenzo Romano Amedeo Carlo Avogadro was a 19th-century Italian scientist who was instrumental to the evolution of modern chemistry. Having recently enjoyed Pi Day (3/14), one may look toward the next important day in the timeline, Avogadro’s Day (06/02/23). Olsen: Celebrations: Avogadro’s Day shows it’s a beautiful world I am obviously missing something and hope to be educated as to why local government spending should be a function of property values and not budget needs.ĭavid M. If, hypothetically, the cost of Boulder County government (including schools) increased 10% from last year to this, but property values increased by 30%, then the mill levy (the rate at which property is taxed) should be reduced so that government spending is only increased to meet budget needs, and local government does not receive an unjustified windfall solely because our homes are now “worth” more than last year. I am confused by recent suggestions that property taxes may rise by the same percentage as the increase in property values in Boulder County. Howard Bittman: Budgets: Property taxes increases should match inflation ![]()
